Electronics 101 for Technician and Technology Programs

This comprehensive set of 10 laboratories includes a step-by-step guide for teaching introductory electronics concepts for two-year technician and technology programs. Created by a former community college educator, these labs use NI Multisim and NI ELVIS. Labs also include NI ELVIS setup steps as well as NI Multisim schematics. The electronic download comes with the laboratory manual and the required Multisim circuits.

CAPACITANCE

Students learn the basic operating principles of capacitors and calculate the equivalent capacitance of capacitors in series and in parallel.

CAPACITIVE REACTANCE

Students will explore capacitive reactance by studying how alternating current flows in a capacitive circuit. They will also calculate the equivalent resistance of a capacitor.

INDUCTANCE

Students describe how an inductor functions in the presence of steady-state and dynamic currents. They learn how to calculate the total inductance of inductors in series and in parallel.

INDUCTIVE REACTANCE

Students will explore the concept of inductive reactance by first looking at how alternating current flows in a inductive circuit. Then the will calculate resistance of an inductor using Ohm's Law. Finally they will learn how to construct a Bode plot to analyze frequencies response.

AC CIRCUITS

Students will explore how capacitive reactance and inductive reactance behave together in an AC circuit. Students will build a circuit with a resistor, inductor, and capacitor, or an RLC circuit. Using Multisim and NI ELVIS students will understand the relationship between frequency and reactance.

TRANSISTOR AMPLIFIERS

In this lab, students will investigate how transistors can be used as amplifiers. Students will build a configuration of components, which forms a commonly used transistor amplifier called an Emitter Follower. Students will use Multisim and NI ELVIS to compare the input and output voltages and evaluate the current gain of an Emitter Follower.

THYRISTORS

Thyristors, or silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) as they are sometimes known, may appear to be an unusual electronic component, but they are particularly useful for controlling power circuits. Students will explore turn-on and turn-off characteristics and learn how a thyristor can be used to protect a circuit.

MOTORS AND GENERATORS

Students will explore the concept of electric motors and generators. They will study the relationship between torque, direction, and voltage for both DC motors and generators.

FETS

In this lab, students will examine the behavior of Field-Effect Transistors, or FETs. Students will specifically focus on the behavior of JFETs using NI ELVIS and Multisim. They will study the effect of gate voltage and drain voltage on current.

OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIERS

In this lab, students will examine the open-loop and closed-loop behavior of an operational amplifier,or op-amp. They will first examine the behavior of an op-amp when the output is not looped back to the input, called an open-loop configuration. They will see how an ideal op-amp behaves in simulation. Next, they will measure the response of an op-amp in two commonly used, closed-loop configurations.
