In this lab, students will implement strain and force measurements using a strain gauge and a load cell. They will experiment with different resistive measurements: quarter bridges and full bridges. Finally, they will implement their own measurement system to solve a measurement problem using the sensors and tools they’ve learned about.
After completing this lab, students will be able to:
Implement a metal film strain gauge in a quarter-bridge setup
Learn about half-brdge & full-bridge setups
Assess the effect of increasing resistance of the resistive sensor within a bridge configuration
Use a load cell to measure force
Calibrate a force measurement using either known weights or multiple identical items
Design and implement a measurement system to solve a force-based measurement challenge
REQUIRED SKILLS
Basic proficiency using LabVIEW
Basic proficiency using ELVIS III Instruments
Basic knowledge of components and their behaviors
