This is an online, interactive course that contains instructions, multimedia, and assessments where students can learn at their own pace. As an instructor, you can create and edit instances of this course, assign them to students, and view student progress.
This lab focuses on the two principal types of DC motors: brushed and brushless. Through hands-on activities, students will analyze the differences between these motors in form, function, and application, as well as the implications of these differences.
After completing this lab, students will be able to:
Understand the electromagnetic principlals of a DC motor.
Describe the mechanical design and functionality of brushed DC motors.
Describe the mechanical design and funcitonality of brushless DC motors.
Design a control signal to produce a desired speed output for both types of DC motor.
Contrast the brushed and brushless motors in terms of major design criteria.
Evaluate the suitability of one or the other DC motor design, given example applications.
