DC Power

This is lab 1 of 4 in the course

This lab focuses on the most common kind of DC-DC power conversion: the switched-mode power supply. Students will complete hands-on activities that focus on the conversion of DC power into either higher or lower potentials using the SMPS module. Both open loop and closed loop control of the resulting DC potentials are discussed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this lab, students will be able to:

Describe the design and theory behind a boost converter.
Describe the design and theory behind a buck converter.
Calculate expected output voltages for a converter under open-loop control.
Calculate the equilibrium current of a switch mode power supply control loop.
Select appropriate PID gain for a SMPS control loop.

Introduction to Physics or equivalent
Circuits 1 or equivalent
Circuits 2 (Semiconductors) or equivalent
Basic LabVIEW Proficiency
